In my personal opinion, I believe that every single person in one way or any there is a hero to someone else. Every single mom is a hero to their children, and every father is a hero to his children. Every single soldier fighting for both their life and the lives of all those back home are heroes. A hero could very easily be any person who lives on this earth. A hero will put another person before themselves. A hero could be defined as "Later, hero (male) and heroine (female) came to refer to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity." There is no standards for being a hero. Age, gender, race, personality, does not matter when considering a person for being a hero.
When thinking about who could be Hero of the Year, there are millions of possibilities. CNN posted a list of people and what they have done to remind the world that nay person could be a hero. Within these people, they picked a top ten. CNN has then asked people to vote for their personal Hero of the Year within these ten people. In my personal opinion, I would vote for Betty Makoni. This women protected and helped those of sexual abuses. I personally believe that sexual abuse is one of the biggest problems in all of the world. Through-out the United States there are places that victims can go once and abused, however, in other places of the world, there is not always a place like this.
Betty Makoni started Girl Child Network. Through this, she was able to reach other countries and watch over their cases of sexual abuse. the Girl Child Network cares for Zimbabwe's young sex abuse victims. Through her program, she has helped rescue 35,000 girls from abuse . Also thousands more have found an empowering community and a public forum in which to speak out. Betty Makoni is not able to stop rape from happening, but she has given power to those that have been affected by rape. Makoni claims that each day there are ten cases of rape. Before her program was started, the number of reports was lower, and the actual number of rapes was most likely a great deal higher.
Betty Makoni gave a voice to each of the girls that was being abused. She provided them with a place where they could go and talk to other people like themselves. Makoni provided many people with a place of comfort. She may not be able to stop a horrible crime from happening, but she can truly help the aftermath from being as horrible as thought.
Melissa, I could not agree with you more. You are extremely right in saying we are all heroes in our own special way. Whether it is the great story of Roy Foster (as I mentioned in my Type Pad) or the heroine of Melissa G., we all have our special powers and talents. We all have our own little heroes in our life. For example, I could say that my parents are my heroes. They help us in every way possible. Parents allow us to become independent people and intelligent people. From the moment of conception, to the day of college graduation, parents are the most prevalent and biggest heroes in our own lives. By supporting these heroes in our lives, we are able to make a positive difference ourselves. Whether coming to a friend’s sporting event, or raising a child, we serve as our “every day heroes.” Some may be more illustrious than others, performing such feats as helping millions of people. This is a truly remarkable thing. If one does not have a lot of funds or aid available to others, the old cliché goes, “it’s the thought that counts.” By helping others in the most possible way, we are able to make humanity and mankind happier. Time honors these everyday heroes because they use what is available at the time. The most resourceful people are the ones that use what is available to make a situation better. Much like Roy Foster, we should help those that need the most help. Roy helped the armed forces in our society who are homeless, and that is a truly remarkable thing. I do applaud your ideas Melissa, I do believe that we all can make a difference in the world. By working together and doing what little may help, we can all become heroes.
