In today’s society more and more people are on face book. With the greater number of people on face book, the quicker a person’s personal information can be spread through out the world. When posting a “status” most people do not think to block certain people from reading it, by doing so they would allow possibly everyone to read it. For example, a co-worker may read that you went to a party one night, when you said you were working late at the office and wanted to get paid for overtime, which would cause you to possibly lose your job. Very often people do not think about what they are saying with the thought that everyone can read it, and that their private information is being spread throughout all of the internet. Today, teenagers are posting every little details of their lives. Teenagers for example say where they go to school, what they drive, where they work, and basically every little detail of their lives. Some teenagers may even say where they live. It is not only status’ that teenagers are posting that could cause trouble later in the future, but the pictures they post, and the comments they say could often cause trouble later on in life. Most teenagers are trying to get into college, or are already in college, when trying to be accepted into college some may actually go on to Facebook and look a future student up. Students are posting pictures of them drinking, smoking, or just being around illegal substances, while thinking that it is no big deal. However, it is not always that particular student that is posting pictures themselves. Some students are being “tagged” in pictures that demonstrate illegal activates by others but they are still present. If a student is found doing any illegal activity, their chances of getting into college are very slim, and if already in college there is a chance that the student will be kicked out. These students are not the only ones making mistakes, grown adults are too making these mistakes. Adults are posting when they’re going on vacation, saying their house will be empty and so on, by adults doing this, it would alert everyone else that this would be an opportunity to break into their house and steal everything. Facebook causes people to post anything and everything, and not truly think before they do so. A person should really think about what they say before they do post something on Facebook, there may be a delete button, but with technology today, those deleted posts can be rediscovered. My advice to students is watch what you put on Facebook, make your settings stronger and more protective, stay out of trouble, and do not do the illegal activities that could get you into trouble. If a student is going to post something about work, they should change the settings for the post so that way no one from their work can read it. Adults tells us not to talk to strangers, they should listen to their own advice. People should not become friends with something they truly do not know on Facebook. To remain safe, everyone needs to remember that what they post will always be there, and they need to ask themselves if they are ready to take responsibility for the aftermath of those actions.
